“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”- (New International Version, 2011, Deuteronomy 20:4)
In life, seasons come when you’re confronted with seemingly insurmountable battles and intimidation from the enemy. In those moments, you may be tempted to cower and retreat. But there is One who stands with you. He is the Lord of Hosts- the Lord of Armies. He has at His disposal all of creation, both the physical and spiritual forces. He is never shaken and can never be outnumbered or overpowered. His victory is sure. He is Jehovah Nissi (the Lord is my banner), and He does not leave you defenseless. He is the One who fights for you and gives you the victory.
God has a proven track record of fighting and winning battles. In Joshua 6, the wall of Jericho, the obstacle confronting the Israelites, fell flat with just a shout and the sound of a trumpet, and the children of Israel took the city. In Judges 7, God caused confusion in the enemy’s camp, and Gideon, along with 300 men, pursued and defeated the Midianites. In Judges 15, Samson killed 1,000 Philistines with just a donkey’s jawbone.
These were ordinary and fearful people who were backed by the God who says a thing, and it is so. Without His presence, empowerment, and direction, victory is not possible. You do not have the wisdom, knowledge, or understanding to face life’s challenges alone. So, why not call on the One who is “an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries?” (Exodus 23:22, ESV). In 1 Samuel 30, the Amalekites raided Ziklag and carried off the women and children. King David, as great as he was, knew that neither he nor his men were equipped to fight the battle and win. So, David inquired of the Lord because there was something he understood about God’s ability to fight and win. Because David went into battle at God’s instruction and with His presence, David had full assurance that he would pursue, overtake, and recover all. It is God who leads the charge and gives the strategy for victory.
In 2 Kings 19, King Hezekiah, the one who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” and trusted in the Lord, was threatened by the Assyrians, and he was afraid. However, because he knew he didn’t have the ability to fight the battle and win, he went before the Lord of Armies and pled his case. He asked that God would rescue his people, and God annihilated 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in a single night and then destroyed their king. This is such a powerful display of God’s power, and it brings even greater truth to Exodus 14:14, NIV, which says, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Jehovah can fight whatever battles may be confronting you. However, the truth you must accept is that you are not alone. Whether the battle is in your mind, finances, marriage, or health, there is only One who stands ready to wage war on your behalf. He is an “ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, NIV). He is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4, NIV). He does not faint or grow weary (Isaiah 40:28, KJV). He is the Almighty, the All-Sufficient One, the Self-Sustaining One, and He rules and reigns forever. There is no one like Him. In heaven and on Earth, there is none like Him. His power is unparalleled, and He is forever victorious.
Today, rest in knowing that your Father, the One who has all authority in heaven and on Earth, has the power to put all your battles to flight. He is with you and “will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV). You need only to go to Him as His child to receive the victory that has already been won for you. Take heart and watch the God who never loses.
Prayer: Lord of Armies, I come to you today to place before you the battles that are confronting me. I don’t have what it takes to fight and win. But I know that you are the One who never loses. So, today I ask for your presence and help. Fight for me and give me victory as you have promised. I receive it by faith, and I thank you in advance, in Jesus name. Amen.
